  • The Current River flows across geological rock in the forest of Cascades Conservation Area.<br />
<br />
This panoramic image was created by combining nine still photographs.

  • A flock of Canadian geese swim on Lake Superior. In the background the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park: a series of mesas formed by the erosion of thick, basaltic sills on Sibley Peninsula, which resembles a giant lying on its back when viewed from the west to north-northwest section of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.<br />
<br />
Colours in the sky are caused by neighbouring forest fires further North.

  • While walking back to my car after wrapping this shoot, the top of the poplar trees were dancing in the wind. With just the right amount of wind the sound closely resembled that of the rushing rapids I had just left behind. This type of symbiotic synchronicity is something I often see around me. <br />
<br />
There is much colour, reflection and movement in this image that I love. Produced as a single capture (i.e., no photo stacking etc), the challenge in creating this type of image is ensuring what is important is in focus while still allowing for movement. Sunlight was popping in and out of the clouds, and bouncing off the water’s slowly swirling surface. Captured with a shutter of 1.3s allowed for just a bit of blur where I felt it worked best.

  • Cascades Conservation Area (Thunder Bay, ON) is a great choice for a quiet hike in the beautiful poplar and birch forest. Two highlights for many people is the spectacular rapids along the Current River and the various geological formations in the area.

  • Spring is finally in the air with new life bursting at the seams. The Paper White Birch Tree sprouted its greenery in only two weeks. Thunder Bay experienced an unusually long winter this year. In fact, the first five months of 2022 were the coldest on record since 1952. Once it departed, spring arrived with what could be described as a beautiful vengeance, claiming its rightful place for this time of year.

  • Current River, Thunder Bay: Spring has arrived! The river's name is the English version of the name given it by early French explorers: "Rivière aux courants", referring to the river's currents.

  • Stillness of morning. Surroundings are whisper quiet as the day gradually comes to life. I listen to the sound of Canadian geese, storks and ducks as they come in for a landing, their webbed feet hitting the surface of the water. I see the ripple it creates on the lake’s surface. Its circumference slowly grows until it fades into the stillness of the water.<br />
<br />
Peering into the distance I sometimes witness clouds and sun jostling for position in the sky. Their reflections enter my lens, and if my timing is right I can capture it in a creative way.<br />
<br />
I set my camera up from a look out point over-looking Lake Superior and the Thunder Bay Marina. And I prepare, adjusting various settings and the composition as I go. Breathing in the morning air. It’s peaceful.

  • Bulk carriers, I think, are unsung heroes. Transporting raw materials that enable the world to house, heat and feed populations and manufacture products.<br />
<br />
The Port of Thunder Bay has a large share of cargo ships coming and going during summer’s peak season as they make their way through the St. Lawrence Seaway.<br />
<br />
It got me to thinking of how to photograph such a huge sea vessel. Most people not in the industry think these ships are unwieldy, slow and clumsy. How do I show otherwise? How do I show that such a large cargo ship is a rugged, fast, sexy machine? Especially when photographing from the shore when a ship is standing still, waiting for its turn to load / unload cargo?<br />
<br />
The bulk carrier pictured is the Navigation Maritime Bulgare (NAVIBULGAR) LYULIN. It's deadweight tonnage is about 30,700 tonnes. It measures 186 metres (610 feet) long and 23.7 metres (78 feet) wide. Most bulk carriers travel at 12 to 20 knots (22-37 km/h). If you don’t think that’s fast try running that speed for an extended period with 40 pounds on your back. Then tack on searing summer heat. Bulk carriers sail 24/7 for months.<br />
<br />
Pretty cool.<br />
<br />
More info:<br />
Navigation Maritime Bulgare (NAVIBULGAR) LYULIN (IMO: 9498248) is a Bulk Carrier that was built in 2011 in China, sailing under the flag of Malta.<br />
<br />
It’s carrying capacity is 30686 t DWT. Her length overall (LOA) is 186 meters with a width of 23.7 meters.

  • When we stand in the presence of the natural world our senses open to a union with all that surrounds us.<br />
<br />
This summer photograph is a wide angle view captured at the shores of Lake Superior in Northwestern Ontario. The Sleeping Giant is to the left, a herd of swimming ducks center of image, with the Thunder Bay Marina to the right.

  • Canadian geese in flight. Captured atop the waters of Lake Ontario in Toronto, Canada.<br />
<br />
The average life span of a Canada goose is 10-25 years, though they can live 30+ years in the wild.<br />
<br />
Can you say "Anseriformes"?

  • THE SAME STREAM OF LIFE.<br />
<br />
I’ve always loved this poem by Rabindranath Tagore.<br />
<br />
"The same stream of life that runs through my veins night & day runs through the world & dances in rhythmic measures. <br />
<br />
It is the same life that shoots in joy through the dust of the earth in numberless blades of grass & breaks into tumultuous waves of leaves & flowers. <br />
<br />
I feel my limbs are made glorious by the touch of this world of life. And my pride is from the life-throb of ages dancing in my blood this moment."<br />
<br />
I discovered Rabindranath Tagore about the same time I made this photograph. I love how the waves gracefully flow atop the ocean’s surface; how they attract the sun’s light. Water and light: two elements essential to life. I recall sitting in a small boat on the Pacific Ocean, thinking how visceral the moment was. How the sun and water accommodated my existence. It was incredibly beautiful.

  • Captured from the Alaska Highway in-between Haines Junction and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada.<br />
<br />
The remoteness and beauty of Yukon Territory is breathtaking. The tremendous length of the highway, combined with this remoteness and the extremes of the Northern climate, often result in surprises along this highway. During my time there I spoke with several people who were travelling the entire distance of highway via RV. What a road trip! If you look to the upper stretch of highway in the photograph, you’ll see a lone vehicle approaching. I had to ensure I was off the road in good order so as not to surprise the driver travelling towards me at highway speeds.

  • WINTER SCENE? IT WAS SUMMER.<br />
<br />
What a sight. It was August. One of the hottest summer months in Western Canada. Flying over the peaks and valleys of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, it was a scene of ice and snow.<br />
<br />
Photographed in 2015, revamped Feb 2022, one has to wonder how climate change has affected these Rocky Mountain peaks. If I fly over western Canada this August, I’ll be sure to photograph them.

  • Located in the Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
    Toronto_MG_6044_Final.tiff
  • Nature is very accommodating, as shown in this night-time wintery residential street photograph captured in Toronto. Tree branches, over-hanging electrical wires, automobiles and sidewalks look equally beautiful covered in snow.<br />
<br />
Northwestern Ontario is one part of the province filled with an abundance of nature. During winter, scenes of beautiful, snow-covered trees reaching for the sky are readily accessible in nearby forests untouched by man.<br />
<br />
I’ve found the beauty of nature’s winter co-existing amongst the hustle and bustle of big-city life to be more difficult to capture. Heading down to Southwestern Ontario’s Toronto, such beauty is there if you look for it.
