Bulk carriers, I think, are unsung heroes. Transporting raw materials that enable the world to house, heat and feed populations and manufacture products.
The Port of Thunder Bay has a large share of cargo ships coming and going during summer’s peak season as they make their way through the St. Lawrence Seaway.
It got me to thinking of how to photograph such a huge sea vessel. Most people not in the industry think these ships are unwieldy, slow and clumsy. How do I show otherwise? How do I show that such a large cargo ship is a rugged, fast, sexy machine? Especially when photographing from the shore when a ship is standing still, waiting for its turn to load / unload cargo?
The bulk carrier pictured is the Navigation Maritime Bulgare (NAVIBULGAR) LYULIN. It's deadweight tonnage is about 30,700 tonnes. It measures 186 metres (610 feet) long and 23.7 metres (78 feet) wide. Most bulk carriers travel at 12 to 20 knots (22-37 km/h). If you don’t think that’s fast try running that speed for an extended period with 40 pounds on your back. Then tack on searing summer heat. Bulk carriers sail 24/7 for months.
Pretty cool.
More info:
