Papakolea Beach is a green sand beach located near South Point, in the Kau district of the island of Hawaiʻi. It is one of only four green sand beaches in the world.
Green sand is created by Olivine, a common mineral in Big Island lava. It stays deposited on this beach because it is heavier than other components of the lava.
