• Current River, Thunder Bay: Spring has arrived! The river's name is the English version of the name given it by early French explorers: "Rivière aux courants", referring to the river's currents.

 • While walking back to my car after wrapping this shoot, the top of the poplar trees were dancing in the wind. With just the right amount of wind the sound closely resembled that of the rushing rapids I had just left behind. This type of symbiotic synchronicity is something I often see around me.

There is much colour, reflection and movement in this image that I love. Produced as a single capture (i.e., no photo stacking etc), the challenge in creating this type of image is ensuring what is important is in focus while still allowing for movement. Sunlight was popping in and out of the clouds, and bouncing off the water’s slowly swirling surface. Captured with a shutter of 1.3s allowed for just a bit of blur where I felt it worked best.
• A storm was brewing when I photographed this scene. I made it back to the car before the downpour.

I love the vast expanse of geological rock under my feet when exploring the area. There is much to discover.

When visiting, be sure it hasn’t recently rained. The rock can be very slippery when wet, which can be very dangerous if you’re close to the edge of the Current River rapids.

Part of the Canadian Shield, Cascades is but a sliver of the 8 million square km (3 million square miles) of rock spread over eastern, central, and northwestern Canada into the U.S.A.
• One can only imagine how this scene appeared hundreds of years ago. The visible layers of rock, probably laying flat, may have been hidden from view under the Earth’s surface. Mother Nature realigned the rock over time, pushing it up to the angle where it now sits.

When surrounded by rock as far as the eye can see, it’s easy to overlook story before one’s eyes. I love the vast expanse of geological rock under my feet when exploring the area. There is a multitude of colour, life, shape, sound and texture. After a heavy rain fall, the smell of the surrounding forest is unmistakable.
• When I walk out to Thunder Bay’s Cascades Conservation Area, I’m taken by the millions of years of story under my hiking shoes. The complex geological rock formations speak to a chapter of history in every direction.

To my senses, it’s the Disneyland of shape, colour, texture, sound, movement, and story. It’s really a magical paradise, not of Walt’s design, but of Mother Nature.

It’s simply beautiful.

In this rather stark rock formation photograph, multiple hues of brown are everywhere. If you look closely you’ll witness erosion, rock depression, water, life, time and different types of rock. In upcoming photographs I’ll share a multitude of colour.

Three hours of shooting feels like three minutes… until I realize I’m fatigued and thirsty from photographing in the afternoon summer sun.
• Flowing water. Beautiful and bountiful. The basis for life; it is also capable of being lethal and destructive. I wanted to capture this as a singular entity, presenting in one photograph these virtues.

 • Freezing water's movement in a photograph brings to the surface countless threads of story.

Whether free falling, making its way around seemingly endless twists and turns over hundreds of miles, water carries life and with it, potential danger.

 • The Paper White Birch Tree sprouted its greenery in only two weeks. Winter was very long 2021-22. Once it departed, spring arrived with what could be described as a beautiful vengeance.

 • Every stream of water is a thread of story. Each twist and turn of its journey comes from, and leads to, another chapter.

 • When a tree stump is left in the ground, its wood and roots will decay. It may take a decade or more. During this time it becomes home to a number of insects, organisms, fungi, and possibly disease.
• In this photograph I love how the sun illuminates and casts shadows across the peaks and valleys of the mountains. I love that this image was captured in August from approximately 30,000 feet. That the altitude was so cold there are glacier lakes and layers of snow as far as the eye can see, even though at sea level people are sweating from heat and humidity.

It’s amazing to photograph a scene that could be 120 million years in the making. I appreciate that I was able to photograph while looking out a commercial passenger plane window, shooting with only a tiny iPhone 4S camera phone. And, that I was able to revisit this series of photographs six years later, and use improved post production techniques to bring them them closer to my recollection of what I saw.

While the majority of my work is made using dedicated high-resolution camera gear, on occasion I’ll use the latest model camera phone I have on hand, currently an iPhone 13 Mini. Because, sometimes the best camera is the one I’m carrying when I wasn’t planning to shoot. But I always carry how I see things.

 • High angle image of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) at night.

The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), also known as "The Ex", is Canada's largest annual community event.

Founded in 1879, as the Toronto Industrial Exhibition, the CNE has enjoyed a distinguished history as a "showcase of the nation". It was "the place" where people came to experience the latest innovations in technology and commercial products as well as performances by many of the leading artists of the time. Although the CNE has changed over the years, it continues to be one of Ontario's great annual traditions.

The CNE is currently one of the 10 largest fairs in North America, and its audience truly reflects the diversity of Toronto and the region.

In 2014, the CNE attracted 1.43 million visitors over the 18 days of the fair.
