• One can only imagine how this scene appeared hundreds of years ago. The visible layers of rock, probably laying flat, may have been hidden from view under the Earth’s surface. Mother Nature realigned the rock over time, pushing it up to the angle where it now sits.

When surrounded by rock as far as the eye can see, it’s easy to overlook story before one’s eyes. I love the vast expanse of geological rock under my feet when exploring the area. There is a multitude of colour, life, shape, sound and texture. After a heavy rain fall, the smell of the surrounding forest is unmistakable.

Part of the Canadian Shield, Cascades Conservation Area is but a sliver of the 8 million square km (3 million square miles) of rock spread over eastern, central, and northwestern Canada into the U.S.A.

Cascades is a great choice for a quiet hike in the beautiful poplar and birch forest. Two highlights for many people is the spectacular rapids along the Current River and the various geological formations in the area.

 • In this photograph I love how the sun illuminates and casts shadows across the peaks and valleys of the mountains. I love that this image was captured in August from approximately 30,000 feet. That the altitude was so cold there are glacier lakes and layers of snow as far as the eye can see, even though at sea level people are sweating from heat and humidity.

It’s amazing to photograph a scene that could be 120 million years in the making. I appreciate that I was able to photograph while looking out a commercial passenger plane window, shooting with only a tiny iPhone 4S camera phone. And, that I was able to revisit this series of photographs six years later, and use improved post production techniques to bring them them closer to my recollection of what I saw.

While the majority of my work is made using dedicated high-resolution camera gear, on occasion I’ll use the latest model camera phone I have on hand, currently an iPhone 13 Mini. Because, sometimes the best camera is the one I’m carrying when I wasn’t planning to shoot. But I always carry how I see things.

 • I’m assuming there really was a reason to post this sign. To me, it seems obvious it’s the end of the road. Maybe the lesson is to sit straight when driving to ensure you have a clear view over the hood of the vehicle. So you don’t drive over a cliff and plunge into the ocean.

Speaking of cliffs, the massive one across the bay showcases layer upon layer of colourful geological rock. Abandoned wind turbines of the former Kamoa Windmill Farm also caught my eye.
