• I chose to replace nature’s winter-grey sky with red. The colour red is associated with passion of all kinds. From love to anger, for example. Where there is passion, there is potential for change.

  • Shot in high resolution to capture an abundance of detail, each photograph in this series is framed as captured in camera. With a bit of post-production magic the series came together.
    CONNECTEDNESS: WHITE-BIRCH WINTER-RE...tif
  • With this series of images I wanted to present, with the bare branches of winter’s birch tree, the mystery and certainty that comes with connectedness.

  • Perhaps, if we use Mother Nature as the example, it’s simply her way of reminding us the life of anything is cyclical. Things come to an end. Sometimes they sprout up again fresh and renewed; more beautiful than ever. Sometimes they reappear in a different form, stronger or weaker than before. Point being, the potential for growth and change is unlimited.

In this final image of the series, tree branches fill the frame. They’re the same branches viewed in the first image, but they’re closer; their intertwining and connectedness has taken different shape. How the viewer will see them will change because of this evolution. Perhaps one will see beauty or mystery. Another may see strength or aggression. What do you see?

  • Thunder Bay, Mother Nature and relationships were the catalyst for this new series of conceptual photography. An unusual mix!

Winter has been long this year. It’s April 7th, and Thunder Bay had another big snowfall yesterday. I’m longing for warmer weather.

  • The cold has left the trees no choice but to continue displaying bare branches. In particular, the white birch, of which there are many. With the sky as a backdrop their long, slender branches sway in the wind as they reach out in search of light.

  • Part of the Canadian Shield, Cascades Conservation Area (Thunder Bay, ON) is but a sliver of the 8 million square km (3 million square miles) of rock spread over eastern, central, and northwestern Canada into the U.S.A.

Cascades Conservation Area is a great choice for a quiet hike in the beautiful poplar and birch forest. Two highlights for many people is the spectacular rapids along the Current River and the various geological formations in the area.

  • Hungary is probably the most well known wine country in Eastern Europe for two reasons - Tokaji and Bull's Blood.

Tokaji is a very sweet wine that was prized by the Russian Tsars, made in an oxidized manner similar to Sherry.

Egri Bikaver, or "Bull's Blood" is a wine of legend. As the story goes, back in 1552 the Eger fortress was under attack, and the defenders were badly outnumbered. To fortify themselves and give themselves courage, they drank the local red wine in large amounts, and the wine spilled on them while they did so. When the attackers saw the men running towards them with red liquid all down their chests, they thought the locals had been drinking bull's blood, and they fled in terror.
The Tunnel Kiln and Dryer Building is located at the southeast end of the property. The Wire-Press Brick Production Plant (Building 14) flanks it on the west. Part of the west wall abuts the Holding Room (Building 12). Behind (north of) Building 16, the concrete retaining wall was constructed about 1891 to separate the buildings from the quarry to the north.

The Tunnel Kiln and Dryer Building rises one extended storey on a concrete foundation. The long rectangular plan is aligned with the short end walls facing north and south. Constructed of steel with red and yellow brick cladding, the building is covered by a gable roof. The east, north and west walls are enclosed with brick, while metal cladding faces the south wall.

The “Brick Works Mural” (1996) by Toronto artist Sady Ducros extends across Buildings 14, 15 and 16, covering the lower part of the south walls. Building 16 shares one large interior space with the adjoining Holding Room (Building 12) and the Dry-Press Brick Production Plant (Building 15). Buildings 15 and 16 are all but identical, except that Building 16 is slightly larger in size.

The Tunnel Kiln and Dryer Building is contextually significant in relation to the Brick Storage Shed (Building 13), the Wire-Cut Brick Production Plant (Building 14), and the Dry-Press Brick Production Plant (Building 15) at the southeast end of the Don Valley Brick Works.

  • IMAGINE SIPPIN’ A GLASS OF ROSÉ FROM ACROSS THE LAKE.

When the light of day blends with what will become the absence of light at night, Mother Nature sometimes presents in the sky hues of yellow, red, pink, orange, and bluish-purple .

Even if wine isn’t your thing, or even if rosé isn’t your thing, I can imagine enjoying a glass on the dock, feet hanging into the warm water, and taking it all in. Why rosé? Because it pairs well with the colours of the sky, of course! And, because of the stillness, and the quiet sounds of the moment.

A challenge of photographing in this situation, apart from spilling wine, is capturing other colours subtlety on display… such as green of the trees across the lake. It would be far too easy to lose them to shadow.

Captured in Haliburton County, central Ontario, Canada.

Haliburton is known as a tourist and cottage area for its scenery and resident artists.
