• There are primarily 12 types of palm trees in Hawaii, with only a couple being native to the state; the most common being the Loulu Palms.

Just about every other palm tree species was introduced over the past couple of hundred years from Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

  • Nature is very accommodating, as shown in this night-time wintery residential street photograph captured in Toronto. Tree branches, over-hanging electrical wires, automobiles and sidewalks look equally beautiful covered in snow.

Northwestern Ontario is one part of the province filled with an abundance of nature. During winter, scenes of beautiful, snow-covered trees reaching for the sky are readily accessible in nearby forests untouched by man.

I’ve found the beauty of nature’s winter co-existing amongst the hustle and bustle of big-city life to be more difficult to capture. Heading down to Southwestern Ontario’s Toronto, such beauty is there if you look for it.

  • I wonder why nature has these trees always growing together in a cluster. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a solitary paper birch tree. Perhaps it’s because they have shallow roots. If they’re all close together, their roots intertwine, just as their branches do as they reach for the sky. There’s strength in that.

  • IMAGINE SIPPIN’ A GLASS OF ROSÉ FROM ACROSS THE LAKE.

When the light of day blends with what will become the absence of light at night, Mother Nature sometimes presents in the sky hues of yellow, red, pink, orange, and bluish-purple .

Even if wine isn’t your thing, or even if rosé isn’t your thing, I can imagine enjoying a glass on the dock, feet hanging into the warm water, and taking it all in. Why rosé? Because it pairs well with the colours of the sky, of course! And, because of the stillness, and the quiet sounds of the moment.

A challenge of photographing in this situation, apart from spilling wine, is capturing other colours subtlety on display… such as green of the trees across the lake. It would be far too easy to lose them to shadow.
• The temperature hovers around 0°C on April 6 2022. The city of Thunder Bay (ON, Canada) has experienced another snowfall today, with expected accumulations of 20-30cm. This image was captured during Mother Nature's intermission. She is expected to resume the snowfall at approximately 11pm.

Captured today, sunshine was added to this photograph to give residents a glimpse of the summer to come. 😊

  • I’m assuming there really was a reason to post this sign. To me, it seems obvious it’s the end of the road. Maybe the lesson is to sit straight when driving to ensure you have a clear view over the hood of the vehicle. So you don’t drive over a cliff and plunge into the ocean.

Speaking of cliffs, the massive one across the bay showcases layer upon layer of colourful geological rock. Abandoned wind turbines of the former Kamoa Windmill Farm also caught my eye.

  • Life viewed through a window. To an extent, isn’t that what photography is? Looking through the glass, or window to the world, through a photographer’s lens? Obtaining a view to a scene that perhaps one can’t see in person. But the view is how the photographer saw it, isn’t it? Part of photography’s challenge is that a camera doesn’t capture a scene how the photographer experienced it. Getting the image from one’s head to a photograph others can see in print or on screen… well, let’s say they can be two different things.

Two people can witness the exact same scene at the same time, and walk away with different perspectives of what they just saw. It’s part of what may make photography such a personal journey, if it’s a journey one enjoys making. Otherwise, snapshots will do.

A morsel of food for thought.

The above photograph, captured in the hills of Haliburton County of central Ontario, was captured through a window. I can’t recall if the window was opened or closed. But it opens a window for the viewer. Nature is beautiful.
• The seasons. They are changing. It’s 8:25am, about 8 minutes before sunrise, per the Environment Canada website. Early December. About 30cm of fresh snow has fallen overnight.

Short days and long nights are typical this time of year for Thunder Bay, ON (Canada).

Not only are the seasons changing. Folks have been prepping for the coming winter. Some will hunker down with family and friends, food and entertain. Some will embrace nature: wearing warm socks inside hiking boots, lacing up and sharpening ice-skates, adjusting bindings and waxing skis, layering up for trail running.
• Overhead view into decayed tree stump found at Cascades Conservation Area.

I love what I feel is the indescribable bond Mother Nature has with Earth.

This aged tree stump is beautiful in its own way. Its wood has been stained green over time by moss, and the trunk’s core is all but gone, etc.

Even after man has cut down a tree, nature still has a natural process for its remaining life cycle, with its roots still deeply embedded in the earth. This process can last more than a decade as the tree stump and its root structure decays, nurturing new life such as insects and foliage.
    Thunder Bay_Tree Stump Cascades_IMG_...tif
  • When a tree stump is left in the ground, its wood and roots will decay. It may take a decade or more. During this time it becomes home to a number of insects, organisms, fungi, and possibly disease.
• Spring is finally in the air with new life bursting at the seams. The Paper White Birch Tree sprouted its greenery in only two weeks. Thunder Bay experienced an unusually long winter this year. In fact, the first five months of 2022 were the coldest on record since 1952. Once it departed, spring arrived with what could be described as a beautiful vengeance, claiming its rightful place for this time of year.

  • The Big Island, Kohala Coast, Hawaii.
    Big Island Hawaii_MG_3208.tif
  • Perhaps, if we use Mother Nature as the example, it’s simply her way of reminding us the life of anything is cyclical. Things come to an end. Sometimes they sprout up again fresh and renewed; more beautiful than ever. Sometimes they reappear in a different form, stronger or weaker than before. Point being, the potential for growth and change is unlimited.

In this final image of the series, tree branches fill the frame. They’re the same branches viewed in the first image, but they’re closer; their intertwining and connectedness has taken different shape. How the viewer will see them will change because of this evolution. Perhaps one will see beauty or mystery. Another may see strength or aggression. What do you see?
