• Papakolea Beach is a green sand beach located near South Point, in the Kau district of the island of HawaiĘ»i. It is one of only four green sand beaches in the world.

Green sand is created by Olivine, a common mineral in Big Island lava. It stays deposited on this beach because it is heavier than other components of the lava.

 • A view of Mahana Bay showing the steep climb down the cove to reach Papakolea (Green Sand Beach) and the ocean. Mahana Bay is located just north of the southernmost tip of the United States, Ka Lae (South Point) on the Big Island of Hawai'i. It is a beach full of green sand. In order to get to the beach one must walk three miles on a 4-wheel drive road. It is north of Kaulana Bay.

 • Layers of hardened molten lava and volcanic rock formed the cove surrounding Papakolea Beach at Mahana Bay. We can see where people have attempted to carve letters into the rock. Mahana Bay is located just north of the southernmost tip of the United States, Ka Lae (South Point) on Hawai'i, the Big Island. It is a beach full of green sand. Further south is Kaulana Bay. The beach was made by volcanic phenomena. Instead of the sand turning black it turned green. Big chunks are called olivine. It is also known as peridot, the birthstone for August.

 • Nature is very accommodating, as shown in this night-time wintery residential street photograph captured in Toronto. Tree branches, over-hanging electrical wires, automobiles and sidewalks look equally beautiful covered in snow.

Northwestern Ontario is one part of the province filled with an abundance of nature. During winter, scenes of beautiful, snow-covered trees reaching for the sky are readily accessible in nearby forests untouched by man.

I’ve found the beauty of nature’s winter co-existing amongst the hustle and bustle of big-city life to be more difficult to capture. Heading down to Southwestern Ontario’s Toronto, such beauty is there if you look for it.
