• Photographing for the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life is a touching experience. There's an intangible quality surrounding the event.

Picture the scene: an outdoor field, much like that of a school's outdoor field, with a quarter mile track around the circumference for track & field competition. Bleachers off to one side. A stage at the foot of the track. Several big-top tents scattered around the track, housing such things as registration, food, cancer survivors, massage therapy and more.

On the entire inside circumference of the track are luminaries: specially designed paper bags with a lit candle inside. Each luminary is a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer. The track can barely hold all of them.

On the bleachers the word "Hope" has been written with even more luminaries. Seventy-five luminaries for four letters. And indeed, there are many elements of Hope this evening. As well as another four-letter word: Love.

In Canada alone, two in five people face a diagnosis of cancer in their lifetime. It is more critical than ever to raise awareness about the disease and the impact it has on the lives of people.

Photographer Dean Oros created the "Angelic" series of midnight images using candle light and long exposures while photographing the CCS Relay for Life. Models are from the The Brides' Project, which donates a portion of its wedding gown sales to cancer research.
• Nature is very accommodating, as shown in this night-time wintery residential street photograph captured in Toronto. Tree branches, over-hanging electrical wires, automobiles and sidewalks look equally beautiful covered in snow.

Northwestern Ontario is one part of the province filled with an abundance of nature. During winter, scenes of beautiful, snow-covered trees reaching for the sky are readily accessible in nearby forests untouched by man.

I’ve found the beauty of nature’s winter co-existing amongst the hustle and bustle of big-city life to be more difficult to capture. Heading down to Southwestern Ontario’s Toronto, such beauty is there if you look for it.

 • One of the oldest industrial brick producing facilities in the province, the Don Valley Brick Works was the longest operating brick works in Toronto and Ontario. The company used the most advanced technical processes and equipment of the time, often simultaneously, and installed one of the earliest continuous kilns in Ontario.

The wide-range of products made on-site were applied to numerous Toronto buildings, ranging from modest structures to the most recognizable landmarks of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

One of the site’s most outstanding characteristics is its ability to portray the complexity of a long standing and well used industrial site and brick works in which buildings and spaces are periodically being added to, demolished, adapted and reused to accommodate technical changes, new markets and new ways of marketing, social conditions, new materials and processes of construction and new forms of transportation, sources of capital and power.

The lower falls on the west branch is the largest of all at Duchesnay, and is a cascade that falls roughly 8 to 10 metres, and is close to the same width at its base. The lower falls grades into the upper falls, which is a long cascade that drops roughly 10m to over 20m.

 • Graffiti wall art and table visible at the end of a single track, drying brick tunnel.

The Tunnel Kiln and Dryer Building (Building 16) is an important component of the Don Valley Brick Works. The building was constructed in 1956-57 for the burning and drying of bricks. It replaced a number of earlier buildings, including a continuous kiln, the original sand-lime brick plant, the #3 stock brick production line, and the “Brick” Chimney, one of four predominant chimneys on the site.

The building contained three tunnel kilns that were fired by natural gas, with fuel oil as a backup. The railway-tunnel kilns, produced by G. W. Booth, were among the first installed in Ontario. Dry bricks were burned in one of two gas-fired Harrop tunnel kilns, each with the capacity of 38 cars. Six single-track tunnel dryers were located in the northwest corner. Each tunnel was 140 feet long and held 14 cars. Bricks were dried in two narrow track tunnel dryers next to the wire-cut brick dryer in the building.

Historically, Tunnel Kiln and Dryer Building reflected the ongoing brick making processes that were introduced in the 1890s and continued for almost a century in different locations on-site.

 • The John Price Soft-Mud Press was originally used at the John Price Brickyard from 1912 until 1962. It is identified as the most historically significant piece of machinery in the Evergreen Brick Works due to its age, the process it represents and its association with a famous brick manufacturing firm.

Founded by John F. Taylor and his brothers William and George, the Don Valley Brick Works introduced new equipment to the operation enabling at the peak of production to produce 43 million bricks annually. Production innovation expanded in the following decades to make it the only plant in Ontario to produce soft-mud, stiff-mud and dry-press processes simultaneously.

During World War II German prisoners of war were used as labourers. The company changed hands numerous times, expanding operations and incorporating new technologies along the way. In the 1980s operations declined as the quarry's resources became exhausted. It closed in 1989.

 • The Harrop single track brick-drying tunnel, Evergreen Brick Works, Toronto (Canada).

Founded in 1889 and opened for a century at this location, the Don Valley Brick Works was one of the oldest and largest brick works in the province and was the longest operating facility in Toronto and Ontario. Brick produced by the company encompassed technological innovations of the industry and were used in many of Toronto's landmark buildings, including Casa Loma, Old City Hall and Queen's Park. Clay and shale were extracted for brick production from the quarry to the north of the buildings, the north slope of which is of particular geological significance.

 • Spring is finally in the air with new life bursting at the seams. The Paper White Birch Tree sprouted its greenery in only two weeks. Thunder Bay experienced an unusually long winter this year. In fact, the first five months of 2022 were the coldest on record since 1952. Once it departed, spring arrived with what could be described as a beautiful vengeance, claiming its rightful place for this time of year.

 • While walking back to my car after wrapping this shoot, the top of the poplar trees were dancing in the wind. With just the right amount of wind the sound closely resembled that of the rushing rapids I had just left behind. This type of symbiotic synchronicity is something I often see around me.

There is much colour, reflection and movement in this image that I love. Produced as a single capture (i.e., no photo stacking etc), the challenge in creating this type of image is ensuring what is important is in focus while still allowing for movement. Sunlight was popping in and out of the clouds, and bouncing off the water’s slowly swirling surface. Captured with a shutter of 1.3s allowed for just a bit of blur where I felt it worked best.

 • One can only imagine how this scene appeared hundreds of years ago. The visible layers of rock, probably laying flat, may have been hidden from view under the Earth’s surface. Mother Nature realigned the rock over time, pushing it up to the angle where it now sits.

When surrounded by rock as far as the eye can see, it’s easy to overlook story before one’s eyes. I love the vast expanse of geological rock under my feet when exploring the area. There is a multitude of colour, life, shape, sound and texture. After a heavy rain, the smell of the surrounding forest is unmistakable.
